Our mission is to become a community gathering place for engagement with science and arts. Through the center’s multidisciplinary programs and classes for the local and regional community, we aim to foster an environment for the arts to flourish and inspire creative expression in people of all ages.
The Healing Arts Center provides a wide variety of workshops and multidisciplinary classes and workshops for students of any age, including families, adults, children, and teens. At our center you can choose from music, dancing (ballet, tap, hip-hop, jazz, ethnic and modern), ceramics, drama, creative writing, bookmaking, drawing, painting, cartooning, weaving, knitting, martial arts, yoga, and numerous special interest classes in everything from computing coding to cupcake decorating. Our Healing Arts Center is welcoming people of any age to try a new technique, perfect a skill, have fun, gain confidence, and make friends. On our website you can find the right class for you by downloading a PDF of the class catalog or by searching using our Browse Programs tool.
The Healing Arts Center organizes over 300 classes each season in drama, music, dance, visual, writing and other disciplines. We also offer collaborative family-oriented programs like Junk to Genius – a team sculpting competitions focused on creative reuse and recycling, and Discovery Art – a summer-long interactive exhibit exploring nature and science through art. The Healing Arts Center also hosts throughout the year a variety of performance events, including our annual Top Deck Classical Guitar Concert Series.
Our annual Holiday Sale has been a community tradition since 1992, featuring over 70 colorful artisan vendors. Our Tsao Gallery exhibits works by community and school groups, as well as regional and local artists. Through all of these avenues we reach more than 25,000 community members annually, bringing together individuals and families, amateurs and artists, and people of all ages and backgrounds to share in making and celebrating art.
In the year 2010, The Healing Arts Center celebrated its 50th anniversary. The Arts Center has been launched in 1960 and it was founded by a group of teaching artists. Our Healing Arts Center is the only organization in the Sacramento region that provides such a diversity of multidisciplinary arts programs for students belonging to all age groups. In the year 1987 The Healing Arts Center has moved in its own building in Community Park. Our facilities span on a 10,000-square-foot structure, including studios for drama, dance, music, visual art, weaving, clay, as well as exhibit and performance spaces. Today, each season over 300 classes for students of all ages are offered by approximately 70 teaching artists.
In the year 1967, our volunteers and Arts Center Board members decided to form a committee in order to acquire the work of regional artists and establish a permanent art collection. The art collection has been acquired through donations made by local artists as well as purchases. Many of the artworks exhibited at our center belong to artists who enjoy national prominence, such as Roland Petersen, Robert Arneson, TYTSEO, David Gilhooly, and Wayne Thiebaud. Through the 1980’s art acquisitions continued and our art collection grew to include over 150 artworks in a variety of media by over 100 artists.
Mission and vision
We consider that a successful organization is one that is able to adapt to economic and social changes and responds to the needs of those it serves. Our Healing Arts Center now stands at a crossroads. The rapid growth of modern technology, the incertitude of the current economic climate, and the evolving interests and needs of our participants are all factors driving our Arts Center to make adaptive changes. Around 80 percent of our income, for most of our history, has come from enrollment fees for our core art programs. We consider that this practice is outdated and limits our ability to offer different kinds of creative experiences and to engage new audiences. Therefore, we are seeking today to find new ways to diversify our income in order to sustain our financial viability in the future.
Over the course of fifty years, the organization of our Healing Arts Center transitioned from a small loosely knit group of students and art teachers using rented buildings, to a thriving Arts Center with a faculty of over 70 teachers and our own building. Our Arts Center chooses its best programs in order to maximize the engagement and sustain community participation. By strengthening our fundraising capacity and earned income, our center aims to ensure long term sustainability. Our marketing programs are designed to drive participation and build awareness. Our board is actively working to optimize the facilities in order to support the programs and mission of the center. We are leveraging our art collection in order to build a fund destined to further community arts education. The Healing Arts Center fosters a quality work environment for volunteers and staff alike. We are leveraging our art collection in order to build a fund destined to further community arts education.
